"St. Augustine spent forty years in a little African diocese, far from official honours, but he draws the gaze of all who seek the truth; he fights till the end, and till the end love rises in his soul. He dies at sixty-five in a besieged town, suffering, weeping at the catastrophes that have darkened his time, full of an immense love and sympathy for all, thinking of his flock and of the Church and of civilization, but not thinking of himself."

-Jacques Leclercq
